10 Throwback Cartoons For Procrastinating College Students

By Victoria Robertson on November 30, 2014

Finals are coming up quickly now, and it’s about time to hit the books. However, we all know how important study breaks are for our sanity, and what better way to procrastinate all the finals work in front of us than to watch some throwback cartoons?

So for all of you ’90s kids, here are 10 throwback cartoons perfect for getting you through the end of this semester.

1. “Spongebob Squarepants:”

Who doesn’t love that famous yellow sponge? In all honesty, most college students still watch Spongebob now. Are we embarrassed? No. Will we continue to do it? Definitely.

If you’re looking for the perfect throwback cartoon to make you laugh and keep you entertained, this is the one for you. You can enjoy the hilarity of Patrick or even relate to Squidward’s desire to just relax. Either way, it doesn’t get much better than Spongebob.

2. “As Told By Ginger:”

Nothing’s more fun than looking back at the problems we had in middle-school in comparison to our problems now. What used to be our craving for popularity has now become a desire to be left alone to our Netflix accounts.

While I’d say this is a change for the better, it doesn’t make taking a look back any less interesting. So if you need a reminder of what it felt like to live the easy life, this is the show you need to watch.

3. “Rocket Power:”

Ever feel the need to watch four kids doing extreme sports you know you’ll never be capable of doing? Well then you’re in luck.

“Rocket Power” is one of my personal favorites from my childhood, and fans will certainly enjoy the nostalgia that comes with viewing the old cartoon.

If this show won’t motivate you to get some work done, I don’t know what will. Then again, maybe the show will only make you realize how lazy you are. Either way, you’ll at least be entertained.

4. “The Fairly OddParents:”

I think it’s safe to say we all have the theme song memorized, even if we haven’t seen the show since we were kids. Timmy, Cosmo, Wanda and even Vicky have all amused us at one point or another, and that’s what it’s all about.

We all not-so-secretly want magic to exist, and I’m sure most fans of the show begged for fairy god parents at one point or another. Heck, even Mr. Crocker wanted them, even if it was just to expose magic to the world.

5. “Ed, Edd ‘n’ Eddy:”

Probably one of the dumbest cartoons we watched as kids, but it certainly didn’t ever let us down as far as entertainment value. All three characters had such distinct, if sometimes unlikeable, qualities that made the show unique.

If you’re looking for a mindless throwback cartoon to clear your mind after hours of studying, this is absolutely the show for you. So sit back, relax and let the stupidity play out in front of you.

6. “CatDog:”

A dog and cat attached at the waist. This of course brings up many questions, but we’ll ignore these and just focus on how awesome this show was: I mean seriously, a CatDog … does it get much better?

If you have ever had a roommate that was your complete opposite, this is a show you would both appreciate. The show has an overly clean and refined cat attached to a messy and improper dog, and from there the insanity ensues.

So if you and your roommate are total opposites, this is the perfect show for when your study breaks align.

7. “Hey Arnold!:”

The football head leading the most diverse cartoon cast televised during our childhoods stole our hearts years ago, and it’ll feel good to go back and take a look at the show with a fresh, and more experienced, set of eyes.

Maybe we will understand Helga a little better or possibly even appreciate the strong guidance and understanding provided by Arnold’s grandpa. Feel like you need some life lessons? You’ve got it: turn on “Hey Arnold!”

8. “Rugrats:”

We grew up watching “Rugrats.” We loved Tommy’s sense of adventure, related to Chuckie’s hesitancy, enjoyed the fights between Phil and Lil and more often than not couldn’t stand Angelica or her creepy doll.

Each of the Rugrats encased characteristics we all had as children, and the comparisons between life as a baby and life as a college student are shockingly similar.

Plus, if you don’t already, every college student needs to know who Reptar is. So go turn on “Rugrats;” you can thank me later.

9. “Danny Phantom:”

Probably one of the most attractive male cartoon characters ever, Danny Fenton proved that you don’t need to be recognized in order to do good for the world. I know, kind of a deep message for a Nickelodeon cartoon. But hey, it’s cute right?

This is one of the more forgotten shows of our childhoods, and taking a walk down memory lane will remind you how fantastic this show really was. So go ahead and watch Sam, Tucker and Danny fight ghosts during your next study break.

10. “The Wild Thornberrys:”

Again, this is a fairly forgotten cartoon from our past. But I think it’s safe to say this was one of the most unique shows there was. Eliza Thornberry has the ability to talk to animals: that should be enough to sell you on the show right there.

The characters are all fascinating, the plot practically writes itself and there really isn’t a better show to take your mind completely off of homework. So what are you waiting for?

So don’t let finals get you down: keep in mind that you have 10 fantastic throwback cartoons to turn to the second you need a break (or want to procrastinate).

Happy studying!
